What Is a Plantar Wart?

A plantar wart is a small, rough growth that develops on the bottom of the foot, most commonly on the heel or the ball of the foot. It is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which enters the skin through tiny cuts or cracks. Because plantar warts grow in a weight-bearing area, they often become pressed inward, making them uncomfortable and sometimes painful when walking or standing.

Plantar warts may look like a thickened patch of skin and can be mistaken for a corn or callus. However, they often have tiny black dots (small clotted blood vessels) and may disrupt the natural skin lines of the foot. Some people develop a single wart, while others can develop clusters known as mosaic warts, which can spread across a larger area of the sole.

While plantar warts can sometimes go away on their own, many persist for months or even years. They can also spread to other areas of the foot or to other people, especially in communal spaces like swimming pools, gyms, and change rooms. Early assessment and treatment helps relieve discomfort, reduce spreading, and restore normal walking and activity.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Seeking treatment early for plantar heel pain is crucial for preventing the condition from becoming chronic and more difficult to treat. When left untreated, heel pain can lead to:

  • Chronic pain that persists for months or even years
  • Compensatory problems in your knees, hips, and lower back due to altered walking patterns
  • Reduced mobility and difficulty performing daily activities
  • Decreased quality of life and inability to participate in sports or exercise
  • Development of heel spurs or other structural changes in the foot

Early intervention allows us to address the root cause of your heel pain and implement effective treatments before the condition worsens. Most patients experience significant improvement within weeks when treatment begins promptly.
