Ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments supporting the ankle are overstretched or torn—usually from rolling or twisting the foot. Sprains range from mild stretching to complete ligament tears.
Without proper management, ankle sprains can lead to long-term instability and recurring injury.
Symptoms of a Sprain
- Swelling and bruising
- Pain when walking or weight-bearing
- Tenderness on the outside of ankle
- Instability or “giving way” feeling
- Reduced range of motion
Initial Recovery Tips (First 48 Hours)
- Rest and avoid pain aggravation
- Ice for swelling reduction
- Compression wrap if needed
- Elevation to reduce fluid buildup
- Avoid early return to sport
How We Diagnose the Severity
Proper diagnosis defines the recovery timeline. Our assessment includes:
- ligament palpation + stability tests
- gait and movement analysis
- foot posture assessment
- referral for imaging if severe
Treatment & Prevention
Effective rehab prevents future sprains. We focus on:
- rehab strength and mobility plans
- balance / proprioception training
- strapping support
- custom orthotics if needed
- return-to-sport progression
