What Is Strapping?

Strapping is an effective therapeutic modality used for the fast management of injuries and the treatment of various medical conditions. By applying specialized tape (such as rigid sports tape or flexible kinesiology tape), we can mechanically support injured structures, restrict harmful movement, and improve feedback to the nervous system.

At our clinic, we use strapping not just for immobilization, but also to stimulate mechanoreceptors in the skin and muscles. This stimulation helps improve balance, proprioception (body awareness), and overall foot function while you heal.

Strapping Application

Targeted Support

We use specific taping techniques tailored to your injury to provide immediate stability and pain relief.

When Is Strapping Used?

Strapping is highly versatile and effective for a range of acute and chronic conditions. We have found it particularly beneficial for managing:

  • Plantar Fasciitis to offload the arch and reduce heel pain
  • Severs Disease to support the heel bone in active children
  • Ankle Sprains to stabilize the joint and prevent re-injury
  • Patellofemoral Pain to improve knee cap tracking
  • Osgood-Schlatter Disease to reduce tension on the tibial tuberosity
  • Midfoot Pain to support the foot arch structure

Functional Improvement

Our strapping methods are designed to allow safe movement while protecting injured tissues.

How We Assess Before Strapping

Before applying any tape, we conduct a thorough assessment to ensure strapping is the right choice for you.

Skin sensitivity check
Range of motion testing
Ligament stability stress tests
Functional movement screening

What To Expect

During your consultation, your podiatrist will apply high-quality medical tape using specific techniques suited to your condition. We will provide instructions on how long to keep the tape on (usually 2-5 days) and how to remove it safely to avoid skin irritation.

You can expect the taped area to feel more secure and supported immediately. For sports, we may apply rigid tape for maximum restriction, while for rehabilitation, we may use flexible kinesio tape to facilitate muscle function.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Applying strapping early after an injury or at the onset of pain is crucial. It protects injured ligaments and tissues from further strain, allowing the healing process to begin immediately.

  • Prevents chronic instability loose joints need immediate support
  • Reduces inflammation by verifying harmful movement
  • Pain compensation prevents other muscles from overworking
  • Faster return to sport active recovery typically heals faster than total rest

Early strapping can be the difference between a quick recovery and a recurring long-term issue.
